Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Denver students come to school every day ready to learn! We read the Magic Treehouse books and the children dramatize the stories with props they have made themselves. Our classroom is filled with joy, laughter, and active learning every day. This is a vital year for them to grow academically and be ready for the following years of school. It is important that they are excited about learning and feel important in school. My students inspire me with their grit, resilience, and perseverance.
My Project
Flexible seating in classrooms provides the opportunity for students to have choice throughout their day. It encourages students to choose the environment in which they can learn best and advocate for their own learning. Students who have a hard time sitting still or focusing on an activity really benefit from wobble seats and bouncy seats that help them get the wiggles out.
Most importantly, flexible seating is fun for all students!
I have requested four wobble stools, 2 scoop rockers, 4 donut seats, and 8 stools. This will give each center a special type of seating. Next semester we are transitioning from dramatization centers to literacy centers which I foresee being a difficult transition for them. The expectations for being on task and working hard will be even higher. I believe these new, exciting seating options will help smooth this transition over and optimize their learning during centers. These students come to school for at least 8 hours each day and are expected to work hard and push themselves at the young age of 5. A lot of the fun in education has been pushed aside to focus on academics. Flexible seating will help bring a little fun back into the classroom.
