Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students are second, third, fourth, and fifth graders who are children with significant Autism. In our classroom, there are students who are learning at many different levels. Our self-contained classroom has a strong emphasis on academics, hands-on learning, social and emotional skills, and life skills. Our classroom is located in an inner-city elementary school in Indianapolis.

A classroom for students with Autism, like this one, is rare and our students have to show a great need to be placed here.

They really thrive in this hands-on, supportive environment. Thank you for helping them to be as successful as possible.

My Project

The students in my classroom have pervasive Autism. Sitting and concentrating is one of the many daily challenges that they have. Having the stools and special balance balls will help with them being able to sit for longer periods of time. This will assist them during their learning. The beans for the bean bags will help to fill our existing bean bags. This will give the students a good place to take a break when needed.

Flexible seating in the classroom will help my students to be able to sit for longer periods of time successfully.

Alternate seating will assist in meeting many of the sensory needs of the students. They will be able to sit in seating that will help them to be the most calm and comfortable through out the day. This will assist them in being able to concentrate on their daily lessons.

The result will be academic and social success in the classroom.
