Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The 2019-2020 school year holds many exciting adventures that my fellow co-teacher and I are eager to embark on. We are both second year teachers who have previously taught sixth grade in a Title I public school in New York City. This year we have the amazing privilege of being able to work together in an ICT classroom of third graders!
At this age it is crucial we get students thrilled about reading!
This is especially important considering many of our students don't have the resources available to them at home to practice and grow their literacy skills.
Due to the diversity of NYC, our school's student body is a blend of diverse cultures whose first languages are often not English. Having these students expose themselves to reading as much as possible will greatly enhance their chances of making the learning process as smooth as possible.
My Project
Flexible seating provides students in school with the opportunity to get out of the traditional desk and chair setting so that they are able to relax more while reading a good book.
Countless studies and many hours of research have proven that when students spend their days isolated at individual desks, they are cheated out of opportunities to socialize with peers and learn from each other.
Aside from providing a comfortable place to read, flexible seating allows students the opportunity to get up, move around and work collaboratively with fellow classmates.
My co-teacher and I strongly believe that by providing our students with a comfortable and inviting space to work, we will see more enthusiasm and eagerness to learn each day.
