Flexible Seating for a Reading and Writing Workshop

Help me give my students flexible and comfortable alternatives to traditional classroom seating.

My Students

Hi Everyone! Please assist me in bringing comfortable and flexible seating to my diverse learning students. I currently teach in a culturally and academically diverse school that strives to hit the needs of every student. We have high reading expectations for all students and follow a curriculum that is both reading and writing intensive . Unfortunately, our classrooms are not as diverse as our student body and their needs. Many of my students would benefit from alternative seating that would allow both comfort and movement while completing their independent reading and writing assignments. Flexible seating will also allow me to informally teach small groups of students in a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere.

My Project

Most 7th and 8th grade students are concerned about improving their Fortnight skills and choosing the best Snapchat filter; however, there are students who just want to create and submit quality school work like their peers. That is where my pullout classroom comes in. During designated times of the school day, I pull students from the general education setting and provided targeted instruction and supports so they have access to the same curriculum as their general education peers.

Flexible seating will help my students to reach their maximum potential within my classroom.

Wobble stools, balance balls, floor seating, and a cozy corner will give my students the option to read, learn, and create in a space that is cognizant of their needs. It is also my intention to host after school enrichment focusing on creative writing in this space. The enrichment course will be open to all students looking to channel their inner writer in a nurturing environment.
