Flexible Seating for a Dynamic 4th Grade Classroom

My students need flexible seating in order to create a customized, personal-choice and group based seating that helps foster each student's knowledge growing environment.

My Students

I have been in the teaching world for six years and this class of students is by far by favorite group! They are a very diverse group of students. They attend a Title One school in which 100% of students receive free lunch. 38% of our students live in Government Funded Housing and many receive other forms of aid. This diversity has created a loving, unique, dynamic group of kids that are amazing at change and real-world applications to their learning! They really experience each day as a passionate, social environment and have grown to be more responsible for their educational success.

My Project

I have worked in a flexible seating classroom and saw the amazing success it created for the students! Currently, I have 2 wobbly chairs that are rotated between students daily. Seeing their excitement when they receive their turn and increase their daily focus and engagement.....all because of a chair. I am requesting 4 yoga balls for a group center, 10 seat stimulating seat cushions for every-day student desk chairs (keeps them having to adjust to keep their balance, using micro movements-engages their attention); and finally, some colorful stools for our math center table to help student move around quickly. I am also hoping to create a classroom library that is more like a library! A easily washable couch would be the perfect addition, in order to create a comfortable, reading-focused space. Research and real-world applications have shown that micro-movements and gross motor skills practice through flexible seating helps most students focus for 18-26 minutes longer on a single task, than without the seating. Thank you so much for helping a young, engaged teacher create a loving, learning environment!
