Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This year will be my first year teaching at this new school. I will be working with fifth grade students, half of which are emergent bilinguals. We will also have students from our behavior intervention program integrated into our classroom. We are so excited to meet all of our students and build a community where everyone feels welcome, safe and that their voice is heard. I am so thankful for this opportunity to work with such a diverse group and make each of their experiences in fifth grade the BEST it can be!
My Project
This year has been very hard for students. They are unable to leave their seats and have very little movement throughout the day due to COVID-19. Flexible seating in our classroom would help students to have a little more movement and comfort. I have a very active class, full of students that enjoy fidgets and any movement break they can get. This project will help us to become more successful learners during a very difficult school year.
Flexible seating has been known to keep students more alert and focused due to the movement each seating option allows.
This movement helps oxygen flow to the brain which will lead to a higher academic performance. Many of the seating options we are asking for will also allow students more comfort. Students can become distracted when they are uncomfortable, which causes unproductivity in the classroom.
Lastly, flexible seating allows children to figure out and decide what works best for THEM as individuals. This can help students to become responsible for their own choices and to really understand themselves as a learner.
