Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher at a low poverty school, I am continuously looking for ways to expose my students to experiences they will not be able to receive without my help. Despite the challenges they face daily, these students are very eager to learn and experience new things.
My students are very active and have a hard time sitting still, so making learning mobile and lively helps hold their attention.
Many of these students have experienced challenges that I could not imagine having to face as an adult; but they still come to school with a smile on their face. The typical student in my class reads at least two grade levels behind. They are completing math work that was taught in second grade, and struggling. My goal every day is to get them to understand one new thing a day, but really in the back of my mind I just want to show them a positive role model and someone who cares.
My Project
Children were built to be on the move. I always try to incorporate movement into my lessons to help my students get out those jitters that they face everyday. However, there are some lessons that involve them sitting at their seats. While at their desk, they do not have the flexibility of movement. Some students try to become contortion artists, bending their legs, feet, and arms around themselves and their desk during instruction.
By donating to our project, my students will have more flexibility freedom while learning is taking place at their desk, making it easier for them to focus on my instruction.
