I am coming back to teaching after six years off. I am so lucky to be teaching first grade at a constructivist public school. The school environment encourages authentic, inquiry-based learning. Students take charge of their learning experiences. These students love hands-on learning and asking questions. They are readers and writers. They play games and use manipulatives as mathematicians. They perform experiments as scientists. First graders are curious, motivated, and wiggly. They move about the classroom to learn, discover, and grow.
My Project
Flexible seating in the classroom allows children to make choices about where they work. I would like to add more seating options to help students feel more comfortable and be more productive when they work. Every student is unique. In each classroom there are a variety of needs to be met. The balance ball seats and wobble stools help students who need to move and wiggle in order to be more productive. First graders have a lot of energy and need movement. They also need to make choices to feel independent and in charge of their learning. Students will be more productive and comfortable with a variety of seating options. I hope to help students become aware of their needs and make choices that will benefit their learning.
