Most of my students come from a low income area and qualify for free/reduced lunches. We are a rural school with students who have not had a lot of exposure to various forms of technology coming into kindergarten. My school only has 3 kindergarten classes and only 2 classes of each other grade level.
My classroom has a high number of students with sensory issues and special needs.
I strive to provide the necessary materials and environment to meet my students' needs daily.
My Project
My kindergarten class would greatly benefit from more flexible seating options. Their little bodies struggle to sit still and focus in traditional tables and chairs. Flexible seating options, such as wobble stools, stability cushions, and scoop rockers will provide my students with the opportunity to be more comfortable in their learning environment and thus have the ability to accomplish higher goals.
With the freedom of selecting various seating throughout the classroom, students will be able to take control of their bodies and focus more effectively on class instruction.
Stability balls will be used at tables to provide students with the option of strengthening their core and provide the movement necessary to keep their minds focused. Wobble stools will also be used at tables for the same outcome. Bean bag chairs, stability cushions, and clipboards will allow students the freedom to work independently from various areas of the classroom. Some tables will be lowered to just above floor level to provide students with the option of sitting on floor cushions or stability cushions while working at a table.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
