Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am requesting this grant to provide my students with seating that suits their varying needs. I currently have the traditional, hard plastic school chairs, and want to add to my classroom other options that are comfortable, flexible, and innovative. Alternative seating can help students be more comfortable and at ease, which promotes a positive learning environment, it increases their engagement during instruction, and can improve posture.

I would like to provide flexible seating to encourage a positive, comfortable environment with focused learners.

The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy found that “Providing alternatives to traditional seating in school settings is a strategy to help children better attend to classroom instruction and participate in seated schoolwork. The American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA, 2015) recognizes providing options to traditional classroom desks, chairs, and floor sitting as aligning with therapy approaches that help a child maintain productivity, support student participation, and prevent “inattention, poor posture, and restlessness when sitting for prolonged periods”

The Online Journal of Educational Technology mentioned that “A new trend of using flexible seating in the classroom has become more popular and could decrease the amount of disruptive behavior occurring with students.”

I think that on the day-to-day in the classroom, we need flexibility, engagement, and fun, flexible seating can aid in providing that and more.
