This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a Title I school, with 90% of our students on free or reduced-price meal plans. We have many English Language Learner (ELL) students at our school. Over half of my students are ELL students. Our students come from working families and families who speak other languages at home. Some parents are not able to communicate in English with us, but we do have Spanish-speaking translators on site.

Our staff is very caring and committed to providing a nurturing, fun, and engaging classroom for all our students.

We want students to know that we will be there for them and give them as much as we possibly can. One great thing about our school is that we have one-to-one devices, iPads or Chromebook computers. For many students, this is the first time they have been able to use and engage with today's technology.

My Project

When students are constantly distracted by their own movements and the movements of those around them, it affects their learning. By creating a classroom with flexible seating, students will be able to choose a stability ball, counter high stool, standing desk, or bouncy bands to help keep them focused. Students needs vary, depending on the day, their behavior, the environment, and much more. Having the stability ball will help control student behavior who have a need to fidget. Children's sensory systems are still developing, and using the stability balls helps them explore that growth without distracting themselves or those around them. Bouncy bands help students with more minor needs of focus and concentration. The counter high stools and standing desk will help those who prefer standing while working or having the option of another chair style. Having the variety of choices available in the classroom will help ensure that each student's needs are met daily. Students can rotate their seating choices, depending on what their current need is. With flexible seating, learning and development of the mind and body can occur simultaneously.

Not only will students be able to focus more, but they take responsibility for their behavior when they use flexible seating.

They will choose what seat they need, and they are responsible for following the rules and expectations that go along with that choice.

If a fidgety student is sitting on a stability ball, he can make small motions that keep him focused without distracting those around him. Each member of this classroom community will be able to be comfortable, be able to focus, and use this opportunity to gain more out of their education.
