Flexible Seating Creates a Comfortable & Engaging Classroom
My students need fluorescent light filters along with comfortable seating options including stadium seats, yoga and peanut ballsin order to stay engaged and focus on their learning.
I teach 75 bright and energetic fifth grade math students daily. These students are eager to learn new things every day. Like most children, they love when they are given an opportunity to have freedom and make choices in their daily learning. Despite their diverse backgrounds, my students all come to school with one thing in common, to be part of a unique, safe, and warm classroom community where they are equally important and cared for.
Since each of my fifth grade students has individual needs and learns in a unique way, a flexible environment will help them learn not only math but, also about themselves.
During math class my students collaborate, communicate, and use technology on a daily basis and are therefore strengthening their 21st century skills. As fifth graders preparing to be in middle school, my students need to practice and be given freedom to make independent choices each and every day. A flexible classroom will build their independence and confidence, and will help my students take ownership over their learning. Offering them a variety of seating choices will be exciting and give students the opportunity to learn more about themselves and how they best learn.
My Project
Studies consistently show that a child's learning environment is just as important as their teacher. When students are given flexible seating options and choices, the learning environment changes from rigid and confining to flexible, fun, and comfortable. Traditional desk arrangements promote compliance and a focus on the teacher, while a comfortable flexible environment promotes community building and team work, both of which are 21st century skills. I truly believe students who are given flexible seating choices are given freedom to decide how they best learn and thus are on the journey to being independent learners. Not only does flexible seating increase student engagement, but it also supports cooperative learning, which is important in a fifth grade math class. A flexible seating classroom leads to greater student control and the ideology that the classroom is "ours" instead of one that belongs solely to the teacher.
My students will enjoy being able to choose between different seating options such as yoga or peanut balls, travel chairs, stadium seats, or even high pub stools.
The fluorescent light filters and fun accent lighting will create a cozy environment that is both fun and calming. All the items I have chosen will create a fun and flexible learning environment for my fifth grade students. My ultimate goal is to have students excited to come to school every day so I can easily engage them in learning new math skills and prepare them to be successful in life.
