My students need flexible seating options to be successful learners in the classroom. Kids like to be comfortable and MOVE when necessary, so why not provide them materials appropriate to meet their needs?

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a teacher in a diverse low-income, high-poverty school district, my students face daily struggles and challenges every day both in and out of the classroom. Despite the challenges they face, my classroom is created as a safe haven for my students to feel loved, included, and safe by me and their peers. I try to provide my students with creative, meaningful and hands-on social and academic experiences that I know they would not get to experience at home.
Many of my students come from impoverishment, single-family homes.
Most of my students receive free breakfast and lunch based on their socioeconomic status. I also have many students that are also new to the country that are English Language learners and have never been to school in their country. Each day, I work to ensure that despite their hardships at home, my students are able to work to their fullest potential and that they are receiving the best educational experiences with me so they can grow, thrive, achieve, and be the best little people they can be.
My Project
Having options for flexible seating in my classroom will enable my students to be more successful and ready to learn. It's been my dream to make my first grade classroom look more like a "Starbucks for Kids", and less like a traditional classroom. Instead of expecting students to stay actively working in their hard desk chairs, students can enjoy the responsibility of choosing a strategic work space and take their learning more serious.
Having wobble seats and stability balls will allow my students to have choices about where they want to do their work.
These materials will be used all day, each day for stations, reading, writing, math, small group lessons, and guided reading.
My ultimate goal is to provide students with the ability to identify and advocate for the seating arrangement that work best for them to learn and focus. Allowing for more movement with these materials will help improve my students' focus, retention of information, critical thinking, and sensory regulation. Please help us to utilize flexible seating so we can be successful!
