I teach at a Title I school, where the majority of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch and go home to non-English speaking families. Some of our students are the only English speaking people in their families!
Our school has students who are homeless.
We have many students who live at the shelter for abused and battered women and children and many other students are living with two or three families in small apartments because they are homeless.
I make it my goal, every year, to supply my students with the supplies they need and hands-on experiences that they wouldn't get elsewhere. It’s very easy to tie a project or activity into the standards the kids are supposed to be learning. By getting our hands on what we’re learning, we learn even more. I love it when my students finish an activity and say what a great time they had and how much they learned! Our students are very bright and deserve every opportunity they get!
Flexible Seating is something that is easy to incorporate into centers and something my students absolutely love. Whether they're working on a computer, writing a story, or reading a book they love to have choices about where they sit. I make it my goal to get my students out of their seats as much as possible during the school day. Centers is one of the easiest times to give students a choice of where they'd like to sit and work. They can take anything they need to work on, grab a lap desk that we'll have pre-filled with pencils, paper, and other tools they'll need or curl up in a bean bag and read a book.
