My Students

Our class of 32 represents over 10 different countries, and these kids are anything but ordinary. My diverse students come from all walks of life. Their urban neighboorhood is flooded with colorful personalities, booming businesses, and it's always full of interesting stories. They come into the school day ready to face it all; some come with trauma, language challenges, and family issues that flood their innocent minds. They come into school hoping for a safe haven, an inclusive learning environment, and a daily experience they can empower that to rise above any of their difficult circumstances.

With almost a third of my class, English Language Learners, some newcomers, these students work rigorously twice as hard as the average learner to communicate in their second language, English. More than half of my students receive free/reduce lunch, but make no mistake, their financial upbringing does not get in their way of being the best scholar they can be. Unfortunately, some of my students are far too familiar with trauma, incidents that alter their emotional frame of mind daily. It takes a village, and our class is a family. Brave and motivated, they learn through adversity always.

My Project

I teach many different types of learners daily. Some need to stand to focus, but others excel while working at lower tables. Some need to be stretched out, bodies flexible in order to concentrate, while others need a structured and modified place to focus.

Two years ago, flexible seating changed my life!

The idea that students have certain needs when it comes to how and where they sit in order to fully learn at their best should have been a given. Putting them all in traditional desk and metal chairs weren't cutting it. With my mish-mash collection of Craigslist purchases and donated furniture, students were motivated to learn, they focused longer, and their physical environment encouraged them to collaborate with others.

Unfortunately, our furniture did not stand the test of time and we are in need of new and sturdier seats and storage. Students will find comfort in the bean bags and soft chairs placed in our library, so they will not only read for longer but be excited to sit and get immersed in stories. The yoga ball seating will cater to my overactive kids. It will get them the modifications they need to achieve their task. The lower table serves as a central discussion area to invite academic conversations. This project will elevate their learning environment while meeting the personal needs of all of my learners.
