This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work at a diverse, urban Title I school in Louisville, Kentucky; our students are African American, white, Hispanic, and from other races. We have many students who are learning English as a second language. Our school is in an area with high poverty. More than 93 percent of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
I work with striving readers and writers who, despite their struggles, are eager to learn and work hard each day.
My students face many barriers to academic success, but it is my goal to help them succeed and reach proficiency.
My Project
In my classroom, I currently have one bean bag chair and one Bouncy Band. Each day, my students rush into my classroom to be the first to claim the chair with the Bouncy Band. Students love the Bouncy Band footrest and use it to wiggle and jiggle as we work on reading and writing in our small group. My students also love sitting on the bean bag chair during independent reading, so I have had to create a routine so everyone has a turn with both the bean bag and Bouncy Band.
With these new Bouncy Bands and CanDo Donut Chairs all my students will have access to flexible seating each day.
These flexible seating options along with a variety of new writing tools will increase my students' focus and engagement.
In addition, my students enjoy practicing sight words directly on our table with dry erase tape, and it has been a huge time saver too! Having chalkboard tape and Martha Stewart Chalk Pens will provide a new way for my students to practice sight words. Practicing words many times and many ways helps move words to students' long term memories. It is my goal to help my students become fluent, fast, and flexible with words in both reading and writing.
