I currently teach 22 second graders. My students are very interested in learning. It is important to keep the students interested and engaged in fun and interactive lessons. We have a small classroom and I am trying to find creative ways to utilize space. All the resources will be used for years to come to help my current and future students be their best.
We are in a high poverty area, and my students struggle with focusing and on task behaviors.
Many of my students are used to chaos. They want to do well but many lack coping skills to complete tasks and get along socially. My students need an outlet for their energy to help them stay focused and complete tasks.
My Project
My classroom is full of second graders who struggle to always sit at a standard desk. Many students need other options to help them focus. I am setting up my room to have some standard desks and chairs, a low table to allow students to sit on the floor, tall standing desks, bean bags, carpet, and cube seats around a table to allow for students to find what makes them most comfortable.
During the day many students complain of headaches.
The light filters will help reduce student eye strain caused by the fluorescent lights. The filters will also help to create a calmer feeling classroom.
When students are calm and feel safe they are more productive and open to learning. To help aid in the comfort factor I have asked for the soft spot seats. They can be used around our low table or on their own during reading time.
The large book bins will be used to hold student supplies, folders, notebooks, and books so they can take their items with them to the flexible seating area they have chosen to use on a daily basis.
