My Students

My students are in a Title 1 (low income) school where some of the students do not have electricity, running water and/or meals consistently. There are many days where the students need an extra hug from me because it's the only one they might get that day. Many of the students are performing below their expected grade level. Most of the students have not had the opportunities to experience real life events outside of their home or school. They pull at my heartstrings on a daily basis. Many students and their families continue to be affected from damage from the flooding of Hurricane Harvey.

My Project

My first grade students have shown that they stay engaged in lessons for a longer period of time when they have an opportunity to use flexible seating instead of the traditional desk and chair. When they are comfortable, they feel less need to be out of their seat, and can spend more time focused on the lesson.

Self-checking learning tools for math and language arts are also included in this project.

One of the items included in my project is a talking sight-word board. The student does not just turn over a flash card, the find a word and press the sound button to audibly hear the word. There are also self-checking math practice tools so students of different levels will be able to practice and check their math fluency.

Both the flexible seating and the self-checking materials will help the students progress towards learning new skills and practicing the new skills they have learned.
