Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is a Title 1 School that serves a very diverse population of students. Many students in my class do not have books at home and when they come into my classroom, this might be the only time they will read a book. They come from single-family homes and many of them receive free lunch based on income. They are smart students, they just need the encouragement from an adult. When students come into my room, they learn to love books. Many students do not realize how much they love books until they step for into my classroom.

Students who are avid readers are statically shown to do better in academics.

Due to our students diverse cultural backgrounds, the school does not have a wide variety of books that students can relate to. Relating to books is one of the keys to get these students to read.

Despite their difficult lives they have at home, I know that they can be successful students in my classroom.

My Project

All of our students love to read but since they are low income, they do not have access to books especially my ESL students. The school does not have a wide variety of Spanish books. By having a personal book collection in my classroom, students will be able to readily access popular books that would strike interest with them.

By allowing flexible seating during reading time, their motivation will increase.

They will be able to sit in bean bag chairs, pillows, and other chairs instead of at a desk. When you want to read a book, you want to curl up in a chair and get lost in it. That is the atmosphere that I want to create for my students.
