Flexible Seating- An Engaging, Comfortable Learning Environment
Help me give my students alternative seating options in our classroom. Stools, cushions, carpets and ball chairs will help to provide an inviting and engaging learning environment.
I am fortunate to teach in a wonderful, rural community nestled in the Foothills of North Carolina. I have diverse backgrounds represented in my class of energetic and excitable third graders. Due to a grant, all of my students have access to free breakfast and lunch daily.
My third graders are full of life and eager to learn.
They are working on learning to make good choices and being responsible learners. My students learn best through engaging activities and hands-on experiences. They are constantly in motion and stay more focused when they are able to wiggle while learning.
My Project
My goal with this project is to create a comfortable and engaging learning environment for all of my students. Right now our classroom has the typical desks and chairs. I would like to furnish our classroom with seating options that allow my students the flexibility and ownership to choose their own seating.
Flexible seating increases engagement, encourages focus and limits classroom disruptions.
Students learn best when they have some control over their environment. With several flexible seating options available, students will have the choice of which option they are most comfortable with. Students that are uncomfortable are not as focused, become easily distracted and are less productive at school. Flexible seating allow students to wobble, fidget and bounce while learning. This movement is crucial for students that have a hard time maintaining focus and processing information. While flexible seating increases focus and engagement, it also supports collaboration in the classroom. Students can easily move around the classroom to engage in learning activities with others.
My project supports all of the different types of learners in our classroom. Students will have the flexibility to choose which type of seating best meets their needs for the day. This simple choice is just the first step for a group of students that are taking charge of their own learning.
