Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are full of energy, curiosity, and enthusiasm. We are a supportive community of learners that cheer each other on everyday. We love to laugh together and celebrate our accomplishments with dance parties. My class is filled with such kindhearted kids that care so much about others and the world around them.
We are a family in my classroom.
We take care of each other, we comfort each other, we work together, and we love each other. Our close bond makes for a learning fun and relaxed learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and collaborating. My goal is to make school a safe place students can't wait to get to each morning and dread leaving each day.
My Project
Every student learns differently and it is my job as their teacher to help them discover how they learn best. If they want to stand, that's alright with me! If a student takes tests better laying down, who am I to tell them no? But what about the child that can't keep their feet still or leans back in their chair or distracts others with their constant movement? These are the kids that will benefit most from this project.
It's not fair for a 7 year old to be punished because they can't sit still or work productively at a regular desk and chair all day.
For some, this can be challenging, frustrating, and lead to misbehavior and academic underachievement. This is why I tried flexible seating last year. I didn't realize what a financial challenge it would be, but I did what I could and the results were great! My goal with this project is to expand my flexible seating options to give students more choices that cater to their specific needs.
I've researched seating options and have found some great ones: wobble stools, bouncy bands, floor cushions, and lap desks. Wobble stools allow students to rock back and forth on the top portion without the bottom leaving the ground. Bouncy bands go around the front legs of a chair and allow students to kick or rest their feet on them. Floor cushions provide comfort when kneeling or sitting at the low tables. Lap desks allow students the freedom to sit anywhere in the room with a stable place to work. With these additions to my classroom, there is no telling what we will accomplish this year!
