My students need flexible seating options in the classroom to cater to a variety of unique and special needs. Wiggle stools and standing desks will provide them some options for movement while they are learning.
I teach at a Title I school in a culturally diverse community in Northern California. My fifth graders come from a variety of different ethnicities and family structures. We speak 8 different languages among us, including Arabic, Cantonese, French, Mandarin, Punjabi, and Urdu.
Our goal is to find a common language of empathy and kindness.
I hope to gently help and nurture my students along the journey. Students seem to change so very much during this year and I have been supporting them along the way, both academically and socially.
Fifth grade is a challenging year that asks students to not only enhance their skills and knowledge base but to also independently demonstrate skills that they have acquired over the years. It is our goal to help support each other in being reflective and thoughtful community members.
My Project
We all learn better and are more productive when we are comfortable. The wiggle stools, standing desks, balance boards and wiggle cushions will offer more flexible and comfortable seating to my students during the day. Unfortunately, children, today don't get enough physical activity and this will give them a chance to release some energy while learning.
I want to empower my students by offering them seating choices that will help them focus and learn better.
It will provide more of a buy-in for students and they will be able to personalize their experience based on what works best for them as a learner.
This process will also help students make choices based on their special needs and learning how to respect others' choices while working with different groups of learners. We are a community of diverse individuals and I would like our seating options to reflect that.
