Flexible Learning with a Calming Twist... Just What We Need!
Help me give my students flexible seating and a calming area in the classroom. They would love having lap desks and cushion to work in their favorite space, and relax in our calming corner when needed with timers.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are so diverse and interesting that to describe them is really hard. Students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds. Our school is also one of the most ethnically diverse schools in Washington. Students speak a multitude of languages including English, Spanish, Somali, and Vietnamese. As diverse as our students are economically and culturally, they are diverse in their academics.
My students walk into our classroom every day full of life, ready to learn and excited for what is in store for them that day.
I want them to know I believe in them and they can do anything.
My Project
Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for each of them. During independent work times they choose their favorite space to work in the classroom. Currently my students are choosing to work in a variety of locations in our room such as: at different tables, sitting under tables or in small corners between furniture with clipboards, or sitting or laying on the floor with their notebook, clipboards or papers. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in engaging and promoting work in them. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice of where and how they want to work. They almost always make good choices about where they sit, are more engaged, and get more work completed than when they are just sitting at their desk. They need to move around, and what better way to do this than having them move and work at the same time.
My students are noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive of their peers when they are given a choice of where to work or where to calm down.
Learning a new language can be stressful and sometimes frustrating, no matter your age. Imagine for children? Sometimes, taking a break is all that is needed for my students to get back on track and produce work. Providing they with a space to do this, create and also control their time would be perfect. This will develop not only self-control skills but also they create independence in managing their time and emotions.
