This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
This was my first year in this classroom and is filled with 25 amazingly, creative 4th grade students. Since starting late in the school year, I was not able to organize or fill my classroom with the needed items that could help make the learning more fun and engaging. Over the school year, I have noticed the real need for more floor seating for the students. It seems that anytime we have a free moment, independent work, or even class discussions, students are always asking if they can find a spot on the carpet. It seems the students are more engaged with whatever the task at hand is in that moment, when they are able to find a comfortable and/or flexible seating.
The two area rugs that are being requested will create two spaces, one in front of our main learning area and in the library, so students will have more areas to find a comfortable spot.
This will lead to more engagement during learning and/or reading time! The floor desk will assist the students with writing and having a place for organizing their resources while on the floor and away from their desk. The stools will be used at our small group table and will create a separate area where students will want to come and dive deeper into their lessons.
My goals are to create more areas for my students to have flexible seating choices so they can be more engaged in classroom activities. I have experienced firsthand how the whole attitude of a student can change when they are more comfortable or have more choices from their learning environment.
