My students need flexible seating areas that contain big beanbags, comfy saddle stools, and floor pillows for our reading and writing lounges around the classroom.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Desk in rows, teacher sitting at the front, worksheets passed out and pages turning is a thing of the past! In my classroom, students are sitting in comfy chairs, enjoying a book on the large carpet, nestled on a pillow reading a great book. This is our daily classroom environment. I currently serve at a Title 1 school. This means that most of the students I serve come from low-socioeconomic environments and face many challenges. The school serves about 900 students and 90 percent are on free/reduced lunch. We also have a large number of refugees that attend our school. Most of my students face academic challenges due to their backgrounds and home lives. Among these challenges are dyslexia, slow-learners, learning disabilities, and language. Many also face medical challenges such as ODD, ADD, and ADHD. Because of these issues, many students are academically below grade-level. I am determined to meet the needs of ALL my students no matter what the challenge.
My Project
Reading is fundamental. It's the basis or core of everything we do. It crosses all content, including math, science, and social studies. What I want to create is an environment that causes kids to not want to put their books down. Whether it be a math, science book or a great novel, my desire is not for them to read because I assigned it, but because they want to! With a new literature lounge and updated flexible learning spaces, I believe this will happen in my classroom. What kid wouldn't want to read in an environment that is cozy, comfortable, and inviting? Students will be able to read as well as complete assignments in an environment that is flexible. It's their choice "how" and "where" they learn. These areas will be learner-centered and will encourage greater independence and allow them to be more self directed as it relates to their reading and writing.
