My Students
Spice up our classroom library! My students LOVE practicing yoga, but they need to read about it, too!
In my Title I New York City public school, the 1st grade students are enthusiastic learners.
Most of the students are English Language Learners from South Asia. While learning a language can be stressful, yoga helps reduce the stress while creating a safe environment for learning. Infusing yoga within the class day has brought many of the students out of their shells. It is amazing to see how quickly students acquire the English language and excel in all subject areas.
My Project
Besides the physical benefits of moving and stretching within the classroom, yoga is also known to improve focus and coordination, enhance self-esteem, and teach body awareness. Through my yoga unit, I will combine literacy activities with yoga in each of the 4 first grade classrooms. I will read students a different yoga book, such as "Peaceful Piggy Yoga," "The Happiest Tree," and "Babar's Yoga for Elephants." As a class, we will work on developing listening, speaking, and visualization skills as we discuss the texts. Afterwards, we will focus on practicing yoga movements, guided by the "Yoga Pretzel" activity cards. Students will also be divided in groups to act out parts of the texts using yoga movements.
These materials are vital to enhancing my yoga unit.
The objectives are to create a meaningful context for the understanding of yoga and to expand my students' cultural awareness. Overall, I want to instill in students a new skill set on how to reduce stress and develop a healthy body and mind.
