Help me give my students Galam Kids Stay-N-Play Childrens Balance Balls as well as other flexible seating items to help them stay comfortable and focused in the classroom!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is located in the beautiful city of Victoria, Texas. We have a diverse population who mainly come from the neighborhood our school is located in.
These students come from diverse families and include English language learners and students with special needs.
As a Title I school, we generally serve most students a free breakfast. Our school district was hit by Hurricane Harvey and is still recovering. We have many families who are staying with other families or in accommodated housing. The majority of our students are from low socioeconomic backgrounds and have little access to extracurricular activities or outside learning opportunities. Our school also just merged with other elementary schools who had to shut down. I'd like to make their new school as welcoming as possible as they transition into a new environment.
We would love for every student to come to school ready to learn and to fall in love with learning, but sometimes we have to help them fall in love with learning like teachers fall in love with teaching.
My Project
As an educator I go through many professional developments throughout the year to make sure I am staying up to date in my craft and making sure to be the best teacher I can be. Even as an adult I find it extremely difficult to sit all day, without movement, and be able to really take in everything I'm being taught. As an adult I have the ability to get up as needed and do what I want to alleviate this, however I know in the classroom I can't always allow such freedom to my students.
It has been scientifically proven that movement is essential for optimum brain function and learning in people of all ages.
I want to increase learning while keeping a safe classroom environment by providing various seating options beyond the traditional chair to allow my students the freedom to choose something that will allow them to better focus and be comfortable at the same time. Movement around the classroom, as well as the option to move while seated at their desk, will help to give them a channel in which to reduce the amount of pent up energy they have and alleviate the need to move that all people get after being in one position or place for too long.
