Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As an inclusion classroom teacher, I have taken steps to make the physical classroom a more inclusive setting. Our classroom currently has a carpet area, a rolling stool, two rolling office chairs with a folding picnic table, and two mobile standing student desk. Students are encouraged utilize any the flexible seating above to maximize their focus and engagement. Students have responded positively to the flexible inclusive seating and have asked for even more options. By request, students have asked for rocking chairs (gaming chairs) that can use to sit closer to the TV during lessons, bean bag chairs and pillows for the carpet area, an additional rolling stool, and more expo pens for them to use on the "wonder wall" (a student controlled wall were they can write their wonderings to drive philosophical class discussions). Because of Covid, students spent years learning from the comfort of their own home and instead of fighting that trend, our class is embracing it by making our physical space a comfortable place to be where students have the freedom and autonomy to make their own choices on how to best stay engaged during instruction. Additionally, there are strategic reading and writing resources that students have requested to help them make up for what they feel they have loss (or maybe simply forgotten) due to Covid. The reading and writing resources will have relevant portions scanned and placed into Google Classroom under the resources tab so that students can reference strategies for reading and writing at their discretion.
