This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My East Oakland kids come into the classroom eager to learn, with every student learning best in their own unique way. I incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, and flexible seating into the classroom to ensure that each students' needs are met.

Though many of my students have experienced some forms of trauma, they are bright-eyed, funny, intelligent, and creative individuals who thrive in an accessible, warm, and engaging classroom.

Though our school would like to provide the best learning environment for our kids, sometimes because of limited resources we experience barriers. That is why I am coming to you through DonorsChoose.org. I want to provide my amazing students with the best classroom environment and the most engaging and impactful education.

My Project

Flexible seating gives students the opportunity to pick the environment best suited for them. It encourages choice, community, comfortability, collaboration, and movement; all things that are shown to greatly impact learning. Currently, my students have the choice to work in a variety of locations in my classroom (i.e. low lighting library, high standing writing table, the carpet) but the seating options are only stools and chairs, both of which are not so comfortable. Making sure my students are comfortable when they are reading, writing, and doing math is essential. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice of where to work in our classroom. I'd like to extend that option to seating preferences as well.
