My Project
Flexible seating is one way to meet the needs of the children in my classroom. As a kindergarten teacher, I am often the first experience young kids have with formal education. In addition to my classroom of children, I also collaborate and team teach with our ASD self contained classroom. The joy of blending general education and special education is what keeps me continually inspired and driven to find new and creative ways to meet the developmental needs of ALL my students. As you might imagine, 4, 5, and 6 year olds are sensory seeking at all times! Given that young children view the world first through their senses and exploring the world around them; having flexible seating in my classroom will give them an opportunity to explore what works best for them.
The items I've chosen will provide more options for ways to support and engage students in sensory friendly ways.
For example, many of my autism students prefer seating that moves: rocking saucers, wobbling stools, and cozy seating. Some students need accommodations in seating in order to move in and out of chairs; this is where floor seating comes in handy!
