Why did the Seven Dwarfs of "Snow White" fame whistle while they worked? Because they were having FUN while doing something that needed to be done! O.K., so I don't really want my students to whistle during Reader's Workshop. I do want them to enjoy themselves while working on that big task of "learning to read"! I teach kindergarten in a large urban district where more than half of the kids come from high-need families. In addition, we are a school that values special needs children being in the classroom - not pulled out for instruction. We have a history of working with children on the autism spectrum in the classroom with a high degree of success. This year I have four kids "on the spectrum", another three with speech & language needs and approximately one third of my class comes from homes with very limited resources.
