I teach 20 wonderful young people with high-functioning autism and specific learning disabilities, from 1st to 6th grade. Each day is very different in my classroom. Although my students with special needs thrive in a structured environment, I adjust to the needs that they possess that specific day. I hope to give them everything they need and more every day that they come to school.
My students are always motivated to learn and are filled with curiosity.
Learning in my classroom not only consists of math, reading, and writing, but also kindness, manners, social skills and behavior support. Despite often having hardships in the regular classroom, my students are eager to learn and grow as individuals. They are excited about learning and accomplishing their goals. I am honored that I get to help my students reach their full potential.
In a world where many of our children are taking medication for excess energy and lack of focus, I'd like to try a different solution. I'd like to set up an elliptical workout station. My students could utilize the elliptical station throughout the day to help get rid of some of that extra energy. The fidgeting and excess energy that many kids experience can be problematic. When kids engage in exercise using the elliptical, they may release some of this excess energy, which can free them to focus on their studies in the classroom. A calmer child often gets along better with peers as well.
My hope is that the use of the requested elliptical trainer and exercise bike would help eliminate some of the "wiggles" in the classroom, and possibly some of the physical aggression seen in the school setting.
Educators are always looking for ways to help students focus and eliminate behavior issues, and adding the elliptical to our classroom seems like a simple way to do it!
