My Students

My students go to school in a very dangerous neighborhood in Las Vegas, Nevada. My school is a Title I, Tier III School. One hundred percent of the students in the school receive free breakfast and free lunch every single day. Many of them go home and do not eat dinner. Most of them live in apartments, hotel rooms, and many do not even know where they will be sleeping or living from day to day.

Outside the safety of our school walls, my students are often exposed to unimaginable things that most kids will go their entire lives without ever experiencing, or even knowing about.

But, they still come to school ready to read, write, do math and science, sing, explore, create, and become a lifelong learner! They want to make a difference in the world and they want to work hard to find ways to solve future problems. I have the most wonderful and most inspirational students on the planet!

My Project

Next time you go to a coffee shop, stop and look around at all of the different seating options. You will most likely see big soft chairs, benches, metal chairs, stools, and many other seating options. Why is that? Well, it's because adults like to be comfortable while they are socializing and working. Kids are no different! The latest research shows that kids produce high-quality work, if they can take charge of their own learning! One way to do that, it to provide flexible seating options. This project will allow me the chance to do that for my little scholars.

A student-centered classroom is a successful classroom!

The circle seating pads, lap desks, and storage unit in this project will ensure that the students are engaged, comfortable, and even more engaged in their learning! Allowing the students to choose where and how they learn best will challenge them to think critically about new ideas and also to learn more about themselves and their learning styles.
