I work with elementary students who are deaf/hard of hearing. These students are in grades k-2 and most have additional special education and sensory needs. These students will encounter many changes in the upcoming year including changes with program structure and program location, and with that I would like to provide students additional positive changes to include flexible seating options within the classroom.
My students are very persistent children who have been faced with many challenges and continue to be excited about learning.
The majority of them have parents who are non-English speaking. This means many of my students are learning not only English, but also their home language AND American Sign Language. Some of my students are also profoundly deaf and have no formal language to communicate with their family and community outside of school, while others learn using the auditory/oral method which takes a lot of concentration and stamina throughout the day.
My Project
The choice of flexible seating, especially those including movement, allows students to take control of their learning by making choices and being active participants in their education. Movement has been shown to help not only stimulate children physically, but mentally as well.
By providing students with choices in flexible seating, they are able to be an active participant in their education while also demonstrating personal autonomy.
I want to foster independence while also highlighting importance of work skills during independent work time by providing various types of seating options. Students will be able to choose the appropriate type of seating to help them stay focused and learning while at school, while also seeing the health benefits of movement.
