My Project
This year was the first year for STEM in my school. I started out in an old computer lab with lots of counter space but very little storage and only 4 tables and 15 stools. My biggest class was 25 students. So, through very kind donors, I was able to get two more tables for my room. Now onto seating.
Flexible seating is perfect for a STEM lab because it allows students the chance to move around as they collaborate and work.
We ask kids to be flexible in their thinking, but then we sit them in chairs at desks all day, telling them not to rock the chairs and to keep all 4 feet on the floor. Giving them flexible seating will not only allow movement at their seats, but also gives them a chance to think creatively and cooperate with their classmates.
Flexibility is crucial for critical thinking because it enables individuals to adapt to new information, consider multiple perspectives, and approach problems creatively, ultimately leading to more effective problem-solving and decision-making. Having wobble stools at each table will allow my students the freedom of movement as they work on their projects. I think it will be the start of a wonderful new adventure for the 25-26 school year.
