Our school is over 70% Title I. Students range from Asian to Hispanic to African-American to Arabic. Our school has a high population of special education students with a large spectrum of abilities. Autistic, emotionally disturbed, speech and language and other health impairments, our school is the definition of diversity.
These first graders are curious, energetic and inspiring.
A diverse group of students who come from a high needs areas, who love to get their hands on new materials. This class has students with IEPs and who are English Language Learners, but that does not stop them from being thirsty learners.
My Project
This project will allow those students with extra energy to remain focused on the instruction while moving or bouncing around on a medicine ball. A comfy couch will allow students who struggle to sit so closely to others a chance to be comfortable and in their own space.
The tables will allow for flexible groupings as well as a space for students to work collaboratively.
These are the top reasons for having flex seating in the classroom: Choice, Physical Health, Comfort, Collaboration, Engagement, Sensory Input and Fun! Studies show that students who are participating in flexible seating during a discussion were more engaged than students who were sitting in standard tables/desks and chairs. The sensory input piece is important because using these medicine balls and different tables will stimulate children's sense of touch. This is great for students with ADD, ADHD, etc.
