Urban students are often told they do not do well on standardized tests like the AP Physics exam, when in reality they typically do not have access to the materials they need to be successful.
I work with 30 extremely dedicated 11th grade AP Physics scholars who are determined to make that stereotype of urban students a thing of the past.
For six months, my students have overcome the obstacles they face on a daily basis to focus on achieving their dream of a college education. They spend an extra hour each day in school and commit to attending an extra month in the summer to work on science and medicine projects and do community service.
My Project
A shortage of resources is nothing new to my students. We started the year without textbooks for two months, but that did not keep them from working hard to learn the material. We started using index cards for key equations and vocabulary that they could use to study at home. As the year went on, they found that the flashcards helped them to focus on important topics and remembering concepts vital to success on the impending exam. Recently, two months before the exam, we ran out of flashcards and paper!
With these resources, my students will continue to strive for the score of five on the exam which will get them college credit for my course.
They are so willing to put in the time and studying it takes. Please help to make their goal possible by donating the materials they need to be prepared.
