My students need access to basic school supplies such as scissors, dry erase boards and markers, and relevant math and phonics flashcards to ensure not a moment of learning is wasted in school.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We co-teach in a Title 1 School in Richmond City, where most of our students are exposed to incredible struggles. Our students are exceptional, amazing children who are constantly dealing with challenges in their daily life. From homelessness to lack of access to food, clothing, or hygienic materials, our angels are constantly faced with obstacles to their education.
Our students live in homes with little to no access to technology, or updated materials, including developmentally appropriate books and activities.
We think it is imperative to the success of our students, both in the classroom today as well as for their future, to have access to the most updated and highly engaging materials.
My Project
We are hoping to get some materials for our classroom that would be considered very basic in most schools. Because we are Title 1 we frequently do not have access to the materials we need in order to best teach our students. We would love to get each of our students a pair of scissors, as for 29 students we are currently sharing about 10 pairs. We want to get our students dry erase boards and markers to ensure constant participation in small and whole group learning opportunities.
Our students in first grade are struggling very hard with basic math and phonics, with most in a PreK or K range of comprehension.
We want to ensure that not a moment is wasted in our day. We will use these flashcards to ensure that early finishers are occupied and practicing their facts. We also have a lot of transition time in the hallway during bathroom breaks and waiting for specials. I would love to turn these "lost minutes" into opportunities for our students to be practicing their facts and improving their self-discipline regarding their education.
