My Students
Our high school is what most places call a "magnet school." Students come from all over the city to take a test in order to attend. Our high school is arguably the most racially diverse with about one-fourth of our students being African-American, Asian, Latino, and White.
More than fifty percent of our students are from families below the federal poverty level.
Nonetheless, we have a one hundred percent college acceptance rate. Our students work hard, but they need more than what the district provides.
My Project
As students walk into our high school they pass a flagpole that flies an American flag. Our school is built upon a hill so that it catches a breeze (even a sea breeze now and then). Our school year ended just as Juneteenth became a federal holiday. As I exited the building and saw the flagpole, I thought wouldn't it be great to have the Juneteenth flag fly under the American flag.
Representation matters.
I want my students to see their heritage and their studies both reflected and proclaimed as they enter our building. I want the flags to say that all are welcome here.
The flags in this project reflect a wide cross-section of our school. We offer five modern languages and two ancient languages. We offer domestic and international travel programs. We have students from many different nations, ethnicities, and families. My goal is to celebrate all aspects of our student body.
