About My Students

The students who have taken time to request these items are members of my marching band flag squad. This squad is only in its second year of existence and these girls are determined to make it a major success. We started with only 6 students and they have recruited an addition four girls this year.

The flag squad rehearses whenever they have time together. Often times during lunch, periods when they have substitute teachers, and even after school. They are extremely dedicated young ladies. Since they rehearse so frequently, the flags and materials we already have are getting "used and abused." The flags have become torn and absolutely filthy. I've taken the items to get dry cleaned and that also causes a major expense. The students had the idea to get a second set of flags to use as practice flags instead of our really nice flags continuing to get destroyed. I thought that was a wonderful idea, and didn't want to burst their bubble, but had to let them know we had no funds to do that. They also expressed the need for a speaker to play music the band recorded for rehearsals. IMMEDIATELY my captain said, "What about DonorsChoose? Don't you think there are people who want to help us?". I couldn't stop smiling! She was right, there are people who want to help us!

The students involved in the flag squad have become such close friends over this past year and have already made plans to keep in touch when they begin high school next year. They have developed leadership skills while teaching the new students, and have developed teamwork skills while trying to work out conflicts and problems that arise. I have been able to step back and allow the 8th grade students to take leadership of this squad because they have become such wonderful young adults who work collaboratively and have shared their ideas with one another in a respectful and courteous way. Last year I called in friends who had experience with flag routines to choreograph them and this year, my squad was able to choreograph all 4 pieces all on their own! That shows independence and maturity! There are so many great qualities these students are learning from being a part of this squad.

In Their Own Words

We are trying to raise money to purchase a new set of flags for our flag squad and a bluetooth speaker to play the recordings our teacher gives us to rehearse on stage. We have been using our performance flags and they have become dirty and ripped. We would like to preserve them as best as we can to continue the flag squad in the future. The portable speaker will make it easier to rehearse because we will be able to rehearse with a recording of the band playing the song we need to choreograph.

We have already taken leadership positions in creating the routines for our show this year, teaching our newest members of the flag squad, and even approaching our teacher about the idea of getting a set of practice flags so we don't continue to ruin the ones we have. We have reached out to friends, family, and classmates to share this idea. Many of them have expressed a desire to help and a willingness to donate. We will continue to lead the efforts of funding this project.

This project is important to us because we helped pioneer a new dimension to the marching band, and before we graduate we'd like to set up the squad for many years of future success. Supplies can be expensive so we want to help in any way we can to help leave a legacy when we leave the school. We want other girls to have the same great experience we did at our school for many years to come.
