Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make the better."
I teach 7th grade science to around 90 students in an urban low income school.
My students are enthusiastic learners who thrive on hands-on activities. They love completing science labs and getting to think and act like scientists. My students leave behind tough home lives when they come to school. But our school is a community where these students feel safe and are able to learn.
My Project
This year we will be covering difficult topics in science class. I want to find ways to engage the students in challenging and rigorous activities that will enable them to have a better understanding of the science concepts. The materials I am requesting will allow the students to see how chemistry is related to their daily lives. They will learn about solubility, pH, reactions, and other chemistry concepts through completing labs that will allow them to see how these topics are connected to the food that they eat. Students will be making soda, candy, and pudding all while learning important chemistry topics!
These materials will make my students excited to be doing chemistry and will provide them with the opportunity to complete labs that we would not have been able to do without these materials.
