Fix the Field! A Student Government Project

Help me give my students and volunteers gopher wire and the supplies to hold the gopher wire in place so that the students can be safe on their field of play!

My Project

For years, the students and parents of our Elementary School have expressed the desire to fix the soccer /community field which is part of our playground. The field is used for soccer games, track and field events, community events, and daily recess. Over time, the field has deteriorated due to erosion and gopher holes: this poses a safety hazard to our students.

Our student government did research on how to fix the field, and they have found a solution!

Community volunteers will rototill and level the field. After that, they will install gopher wire with landscape staples, and top that with up to 3 inches of leveled topsoil leveled with a 2% crown / slope grade. Finally, they will either hydroseed or plant seed on top of that topsoil. Throughout the process, our students have consulted local contractors, community members, and agricultural businesses.

Here are the major material expenses:

140 Rolls of Gopher Wire = $28,729.40

Landscape Staples and Zip Ties = up to $1000

700 cubic yards of clean topsoil = $25,687

Hydroseed or Grass Seed = Up to a maximum of $16,000

Two subsequent organic fertilizer treatments = $600

The maximum supply costs will be $72,000

Our student government was the first group to raise and donate money to the project, in the amount of $2,800. Through various fundraisers and community outreach, that total has grown to $4,000. Our student government is learning the skills needed to make community / construction projects become a reality: skills such as problem solving, mathematics, staying in budgets, and public relations.
