Help me give my students fitness tools such as drumsticks and foam rolloers today in order to help them gain the confidence and ability to make healthier choices tomorrow!
I teach at a Title I Performing Arts High School in the San Fernando Valley and the students come from varied socioeconomic backgrounds. I teach "Fitness for PE" in the PE department, as well as contemporary dance in our Dance Academy. My students are in the 9th-12th grade, with various fitness levels and abilities. My PE/Fitness classes are held in a small conference-style room, with very few resources. My classes are primarily pilates and yoga-based, infusing cardiovascular work and other traditional and non-traditional fitness trends.
My Project
My goal is to give students access to a variety of fitness modalities and tools so that hopefully, they will discover at least one form of activity that they love and can carry with them beyond high school. I want to give them tools and confidence to make healthier choices throughout their life.
Physical education goes beyond sports.
There are many ways to achieve a healthy and active lifestyle that goes beyond the traditional. You don't have to be athletic, fast, flexible, strong, or coordinated in order to achieve a healthy lifestyle.
The drumsticks will be used in our cardio drumming classes. This is a fun way to combine music, coordination, and cardiovascular endurance to our class. The foam rollers are also a great tool to teach coordination, balance, and control. I hope to expose my students to a variety of fitness tools in their curriculum in order to keep them challenged & engaged. I want them to be knowledgeable about the strength that their bodies possess, and to not give into "I can't." I want them each to find the baby steps to fitness success and to create achievable goals.
