Our school is an elementary (Pre-K - 5th grade) Title I school in a diverse area. Our students come from low-income families and rarely have the opportunity to experience much outside of their neighborhood. We service ESL (English Second Language) and hearing impaired students as well as our regular and special education students. This is what makes our school unique!
Our K-5 students love PE class!
At our school, each grade level receives PE instruction daily for 45 minutes. Our students are eager to learn and I am eager to provide my students with this opportunity! Our students look forward to PE and being able to play and socialize in a healthy and fun way!
The biggest hurdle for our PE department is we do not have a gym to store equipment or for our students to play activities in. Our students are outside in the elements (hot or cold) to play activities/games. During rainy days, our students have to stay in the classroom.
I believe that if these students received the proper equipment it would make their PE class a better place to learn while they are having fun!
Our students in 3rd - 5th grade take a fitness test at the beginning and end of every school year called Fitness Gram. It is a mandatory test for every student in the 4th and 5th grade. The Fitness Gram test students flexibility, upper body strength, core strength, as well as their height and weight to get their BMI. The test at the beginning of the year is their baseline. They take the same test at the end of the year to see their growth. My school does not have any of the equipment/materials required to take these tests. We have to improvise to get these test completed. We need the torso-flex trunk lift and the ultra flex tester to measure students flexibility. We need the curl up tester to measure the students core strength. We are in desperate need of this equipment. By having the actual equipment to take these test we can complete the test faster as well as be more accurate on the numbers.
