Do you ever wonder how many steps you took during an activity? What fitness zone were you in while you were exercising? I was awarded a grant to purchase pedometers and software for my students. The pedometer measures frequency, intensity, and time of activity.
My students come from middle to lower class families.
I also have a high percentage of English as a New Language (ENL) learners in my classes. Most of my students enjoy physical education class. They are eager to learn and move around. They love using new equipment and would benefit from seeing their results after an activity. They also enjoy when we tie other subjects like math into what they are doing in physical education, since that's what happens in the real world!
The pedometers and software have already been purchased by awarded grant money. What has been missing is an easy accessible place for the students to upload their pedometer data and then use that data to analyze it. Having a laptop in the gym and also our math classroom would allow the students to quickly take their pedometer after an activity to upload their data. Analyzing data is a critical skill at all middle school levels and the computer will allow the students to go through this process more efficiently.
Having a laptop for the pedometers will allow the students to see their progress immediately.
Seeing this will help students understand the importance of being physically fit. This data can also be used to help students develop fitness and wellness goals, as well as make connections to similar work that they are doing in math and science classes.
