I need professional development (online) for my new role as a high school PE teacher. I'm requesting funds for two courses: CrossFit Kids and CrossFit Anatomy.
I will be teaching grades 9-12 at a charter school in West Town, Chicago. We are currently virtual through semester 1, so I will be teaching PE from my living room!
My students are high schoolers coming from 40 different zip codes around Chicago!
All 635 students take PE and each student will be assigned to one of the three PE teachers. Approximately 77% of the students I teach are LatinX and 17% are African American.
My Project
After teaching math for 12 years, I have transitioned to teaching my true passion which is physical education. The bulk of my educational experiences and training has been for teaching math in the classroom. I am endorsed to teach grades 9-12 physical education, but since I do not yet have teaching experience in this subject I've decided to branch out and gain more knowledge through outside sources such as CrossFit for functional fitness training.
My school's physical education curriculum follows the functional fitness model and I want to learn as much as possible outside of the required training to give the best knowledge I can to my students.
My students will benefit from this professional development as I will be teaching them functional movements such as the squat, burpee, push-up, lunge and hinge at waist. When teaching students functional movements, it will translate over to real life skills and athletics. Teaching my students about overall lifestyle health/wellness is another aspect I will take away from this training. Instead of playing traditional PE games such as dodgeball, I want to teach my students real life functional movement skills that will be applicable to their life when they leave high school.
About me: I played DII college soccer, I have completed 5 marathons, 7 half ironmans and 1 full ironman. I have my CrossFit Level 1 coaching certificate and enjoy competing in local CrossFit competitions when we aren't in the middle of a pandemic!
