Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work at an inner city school in Los Angeles that has a focus on Science, Math and Technology. Our school is a Title 1 school and over 90% of our students qualify for free lunch. Our population is largely Latino and African American with a large population of English Language Learners.
My students are very dedicated to learning and their community.
They keep their hope and optimism in spite of living in blighted neighborhoods. With little access to parks or safe places to play, school is often the only place for many of my students to get physical activity. In addition our school has few balls and little functional sports equipment, which makes even recess kind of a drag.
My Project
With the equipment we will be able to have PE sessions where an many more students will be able to participate. With the cones I will be able to set up drill and games so that I can break the large group into smaller ones. With multiple balls we will be able to have students drilling and practicing in smaller groups so they will get more practice time.
Also, with the different types of balls students will be able to work through rotations and be exposed to multiple sports and skills. This will whip these students into shape, and have them loving it!
PE should be more than just running and jumping jacks!
Because of lack of access many students don't even know the rules to some very common games. A trend towards video games and TV, in combination with an unsafe neighborhood, leads students to have have sedentary lifestyles at a very young age.
Physical activity needs to be fun and purposeful in order to promote healthy and active lifestyles. Help support a better and longer life for these students!
