This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Read. Study. Do your homework. Reading will make you smarter. School will help you succeed. I tell my students these every day, but I know of one man who can convince these students of the truth to these statements: Geoffrey Canada. As the creator of the successful Harlem Children's Zone in New York, he can motivate my students to academic success. If my students read his memoir "Fist, Stick, Knife, Gun," they will be inspired by his excellent example while increasing their reading levels. I taught 10th Grade English last year, and I will be teaching the same students in 11th Grade English this year. My school is located in the Bronx. My students face enormous challenges to even make it to school. Eighty five percent receive free lunch because they live under the poverty line. Even more, my students have been unnerved and underestimated in their educational experiences. Suburban schools do not even "prep" students for the English Regents, and many city students fail even after the preparations. My students need to prepare to take the Regents and the SATs. Many students are still on the seventh grade reading level and state test and SATs are over SIX hours long. My students need your help to prepare for these tests and college. Every day, my class begins independent reading. My students have ravaged through my small, inadequate library this year. There is no school library. They need new, inspiring books to increase their reading abilities, interest them in English, AND inspire them to set big dreams. "Fist, Stick, Knife, Gun" is this book. This donation is not just about books or reading levels. It is about Thomas, who could not read when he entered the ninth grade. It is about John, who lost motivation as he saw his friends dropping out. It is about the future of every single student, who needs a role model and a voice of inspiration to motivate them to achieve their goals. Please give my 120 shining faces a fair chance at the future.
