This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

There is something fishy about this circulatory system lesson (or at least we hope there will be!). We are requesting fish tanks for our 7th grade to observe during our circulatory system unit and bring some life into our life science classrooms!

I am a 7th grade math/science teacher at a small Title I public school in California founded on the notion that all students deserve an academically rigorous education in a safe space that pushes them to develop as Artists, Scholars, and Warriors.

Ninety-three percent of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch; seventy percent of our students are English language learners. In addition the language needs in our classroom, many students have special learning needs including auditory and visual processing disorders. Our school is dedicated to providing our students with the tools and education to prepare them for college. We work closely with the community and parents to prepare our students for college.

My Project

I am requesting two full goldfish kits which include tanks, filters, and the fish themselves. These fish will be used for the purpose of observing the circulatory system through the thin membrane of their tails via microscopes. After applying adrenaline, students will observe the effects of this neurotransmitter. Precautions will be taken so that no fish will be killed or harmed in this process, although they may be slightly traumatized.

In addition to the instant engagement of “oooh, gross” science, hands on experience is critical for English language learners and students with special needs.

Having something as tangible as a goldfish's tail wriggling under microscope a allows students to make the jump from memorizing to actually applying their knowledge. For some, this will be a real challenge to push their comfort zone; for others, it might be the moment they knew that Biology was the path for them.
