Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Science is a dynamic, exciting topic that is too often addressed through text books. Art is a critical part of a child's learning experience that is too often pushed aside for more serious subjects. Combining the two is a wonderful opportunity to support both academic and creative needs.

My 32 second grade students live in a community with one of the highest poverty densities in the state of Oregon.

Close to half of my students come from families where English is not their first language, and we have 4 different home languages represented. Learning new topics can be challenging in any setting, learning new topics in an unfamiliar language can be bewildering. Incorporating art activities into science and social studies units supports learning in several ways. It gives students a hands-on opportunity to create a model of what they are studying. It allows them to directly observe and explore the subject. It exposes the students to artistic techniques that can be transferred to other activities. Perhaps most importantly it is just plain fun. In a setting where elementary school art has been cut from our district budget, these students crave an opportunity to experiment with crayons, paint, scissors, paper, just about anything that is not a text book.

My Project

My students need life-size rubber replicas of fish and leaves plus brayers and brushes to create illustrations for reports on animal and plant life cycles. The students in my class need a set of life-size rubber replicas of fish and plants to create realistic illustrations for their animal and plant life cycle reports. The replicas are made from molds of real fish so students can observe and compare the size and shape of bodies, fins, tails, mouths and eyes. Following our academic study of living and non-living things, students will be able to explore a traditional art form from Japan, fish printing. Students will have the opportunity to experiment with the quantity of paint needed to create a print that clearly shows physical details. How much is too much? How much is not enough? How hard do you need to press to create a print? What happens to the paper if you press too hard? Art is a process that requires quality materials, and time for experimentation through trial and error, With art being cut from our district budget we need to find ways to link art to our academic studies. With art, students create while they learn.

The fish prints that we will be able to make in our classroom with these supplies will provide my students with the opportunity to compare the differences in size, shape, and purpose of scales, fins and body type.

At the same time these materials will provide an opportunity to experiment with the quantity of paint, the importance of technique, and the value of the patience needed to create a work of art.
